This rich purple and white haori is from the Showa period, somewhere around the 1950s-1960s, and is made using a shibori technique - a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing method where thousands of tiny points of fabric are individually bound before dyeing, creating that characteristic speckled texture and a unique tactile depth that you can almost feel just by looking at it. The design features a bold large-scale seigaiha pattern - overlapping wave scales that have been used in Japanese art and textiles for centuries, symbolising good luck, protection and the enduring power of the sea. The inside is lined in a delicate white fabric with a playful print of wagasa (traditional Japanese umbrellas) and sakura (cherry blossoms) in soft purple. A piece with real presence - the deep purple is striking without being loud, and the scale of the pattern gives it a confidence that few vintage pieces carry.
Throw it over a simple outfit to instantly elevate your look, or wear it as a relaxed layer at home - this haori works effortlessly across both worlds.
Haori ties (haori himo) are included and are handmade from silk.
