This black and white haori is from the Showa period, somewhere around the 1950s-1960s, and it's made using a shibori technique - a traditional Japanese resist-dyeing method where thousands of tiny points of fabric are individually bound before dyeing, which gives it that beautiful speckled texture and a unique tactile feel you can sense just by looking at it. Large chrysanthemum (kiku) blooms in bold black outlines run across the lower body and sleeves - a flower that in Japanese culture carries deep meaning, linked to longevity, nobility, and the Imperial household. The inside is lined in a soft white silk with a delicate woven floral and crane pattern. Monochrome in colour but genuinely rich in texture and detail, this is a piece that grows on you the more you look at it.
Throw it over a simple outfit to instantly elevate your look, or wear it as a relaxed layer at home - this haori works effortlessly across both worlds.
Haori ties (haori himo) are included and are handmade from silk.
