A navy men's haori in a finely textured cloth, likely from the mid to late Showa era, around the 1960s to 1980s. The charcoal-navy face is entirely without pattern. Inside, a pale grey lining carries a demon mask across the whole back - horned, wide-eyed and bared-toothed, most likely the hannya of noh theatre - built up from thousands of hundreds shibori knots. Shibori is a resist-dyeing technique in which the cloth is bound tightly before it goes into the dye, so the bound points stay pale.
The piece is double-sided. Traditionally, only the wearer would ever know of the demon within - but we think it deserves to be seen, and we recommend wearing it both ways.
Throw it over jeans and a tee for an easy everyday look, or wear it as a light jacket to dress up a more formal outfit.
Haori ties (haori himo) are not included for this item but can be purchased separately.
