A truly special nagajuban - the under-kimono traditionally worn beneath a kimono originally made for men but suitable for both men and women. Across the back there is a serene landscape hand-painted in soft greys and browns over a dusty steel-blue ground - a five-storey pagoda, a temple with sweeping tiled roofs and a distant castle among misty pine hills, with cranes in flight overhead. Delicate gold-line accents catch the light, bands of white kanoko shibori (tie-dye) drift across the shoulders like clouds, and the artist has finished the work with a hand-painted signature and red seal.
Style it open as a light, elegant robe at home or as a layer over a plain top and trousers, letting the painted back do the talking.
